more important news;
The rocky, three-year Patriots’ tenure of Adalius Thomas ended yesterday with a four-sentence press release.
In summation, it went something like this: We cut him today. We signed him March 3, 2007. Last season he played in 14 games with 31 tackles. For his career, he has played in 135 games with 584 tackles.
Adios, AD.
It was a move entirely expected; the only mystery was when the Patriots would cut ties with the two-time Pro Bowler, who was signed to a five-year, $35 million contract in 2007, the most expensive free agent signing in franchise history.
“I had a good time while it lasted,’’ Thomas said last night. “I will miss the fans and communities that my foundation has worked with as well as the locker room. I look forward to my next team, whoever that may be. I have learned a lot from Bill [Belichick], and he has made me a better player in my understanding of the game.’’
In an interview earlier this month, the 32-year-old Alabama native said it was “uncomfortable’’ not knowing his status with the team.
“You don’t really know where you’re going to be, so you just try to prepare yourself and really just remain open,’’ he said a day before his youth football camp at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he starred in the late 1990s. “You don’t know what’s going to happen — OK, I’m employed, but am I really employed? You never can tell.’’
Thomas was the gem of the 2007 free agent class, coming off the best season of his career: an 83-tackle, 11-sack campaign that earned him his second trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.
There, he and the AFC team were coached by Belichick, and in that atmosphere, Thomas thought the New England coach was a cool guy to be around.
But things changed once the leis had wilted and the games turned serious.
Thomas – lauded for a versatility in which he played nearly every defensive position for the Ravens, including cornerback — was immediately moved to inside linebacker in ’07 and remained there for the first nine games. When Rosevelt Colvin suffered a season-ending foot injury against Indianapolis, Thomas was moved to the outside, and he took advantage: over the final seven regular-season games, he recorded six sacks, and he was the Patriots’ best defensive player in Super Bowl XLII, with five tackles and two sacks of the Giants’ Eli Manning.
That season, he had T-shirts made up and he handed them to his teammates, declaring they all were connoisseurs of Belichick’s humble pie. During his first practice with the team, Belichick ripped into superstar Tom Brady, and Thomas realized then that no one on the roster was above reproach.
